For over 40 years, the San Francisco Decorator Showcase has raised funds to benefit the San Francisco University High School financial aid program. This event allows hundreds of deserving Bay Area students access to a world-class college preparatory education. With its rich history the San Francisco Decorator Showcase House has become the design event of the year. This year, BlueStar® is the exclusive kitchen appliance partner and was a major influence in Designer Ian Stallings’ transformative design.
The 2018 house is in the heart of San Francisco’s Marina District. Built in 1930, the home has four bedrooms and three and one-half baths, with spectacular views of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and Marina Green. This sophisticated three-level home was renovated by 21 of Northern California’s top interior design firms into the West Coast’s premier showcase event.

The kitchen was designed by Ian Stallings Design, a high-end, full service interior design firm. With over a decade of experience, Ian Stallings has completed projects globally in some of the finest homes in San Francisco, London, New York, and a furniture gallery and showroom in China. These success stories have one thing in common: a deep commitment to the client’s needs, desires, experiences and aspirations.
Stallings wanted the kitchen to be bright and charming while allowing the space to tell the story of a family’s journey through the day: up in the morning for a healthy breakfast in the kitchen, a meditation and stretch to keep the mind and body grounded and ending the day in the open seating area in the family room to tell stories of the day or watch movies.
“While the bones of the kitchen space were good, the biggest design challenge was how to make the kitchen and family room flow well together while still giving each room its own intimacy,” said Stallings. “I thought it would be a good idea to use the beautiful Kangaroo Paw Chandelier over the peninsula with its long gold tendrils to create a visual divider between the spaces while still keeping it open.”
“As an interior designer, color is a big focus to really tell a story in a room. The fact that BlueStar® offers custom colorization for all its appliances sets them apart. They have a wide variety of colors in beautiful rich hues which enable designers to really customize a kitchen for a client,” he said. The kitchen’s major appliances – double electric wall ovens, premium built-in refrigeration and dishwasher panel – have been customized to blend seamlessly with the newly painted blue-grey cabinetry; and each appliance features striking polished brass trim.
The Platinum rangetop compliments the appliances with knobs in the same color and matching trim. Offering unsurpassed power and performance, the rangetop features industry-leading 25,000 BTU open burners plus an innovative Interchangeable Griddle/Charbroiler. The custom-made Silverado ventilation hood by Prizer Hoods is crafted in hammered stainless steel, with brushed brass straps and rivets for maximum impact. The pro-style hood merges heavy–duty construction with seamless design to offer uncompromised durability, functionality and beauty.
With durable stainless steel interiors, dual compressors for enhanced food preservation and roomy interiors, the 36-inch Built-In Refrigeration line is designed for serious cooking and entertaining. The refrigerator’s fully extending bottom shelf is designed to fit a full-size commercial sheet pan — as is the freezer shelf – that way, extra-large pans prepped with pastries or hors d’oeuvres can go straight from the refrigerator or freezer into an oversized BlueStar® oven, another brand hallmark.
The Double Electric Wall Oven –with chef-inspired French doors– features a powerful 2,500 watt bake element and intense 5,000 watt infrared broiler. The 1800 watt heat assist element in the back of the cavity means faster preheating and less time waiting. A professional-quality, integrated artesian baking stone can used to create perfectly crisp breads and pizza which can be cooked right on top of the baking stone for restaurant style results. Twelve different cooking modes including Bake, Convection Bake, Roast, Convection Roast, Broil, StoneBake™, Proof and Sabbath, provide numerous cooking options for unmatched versatility.
